Celtics Youth: Which Emerging Player is Poised for Growth This Season?

Boston Celtics: Focus on Player Development for the 2026 NBA Season

As the Boston Celtics approach the 2026 NBA season, the coaching staff, led by Joe Mazzulla, has a unique opportunity to focus on player development, particularly for their younger athletes. With core veterans from their championship squad departing and Jayson Tatum recovering from Achilles surgery, a door has opened for less-experienced players to step into significant roles.

Young Talents to Watch

In the second week of our Ramp to Camp feature, we sought insights from our panel about which of the Celtics’ young talents might experience a breakthrough this season. Special attention was given to players 25 years old and younger, including:

  • Hugo Gonzalez (19)
  • Jordan Walsh (21)
  • Josh Minott (22)
  • Baylor Scheierman (24)

Additionally, we broadened our scope to include three players just past that age threshold: Neemias Queta, Luka Garza, and Xavier Tillman. Notably, Anfernee Simons, despite also being 26, was mentioned in the context of rising potential.

Standout Candidates

A standout candidate is Neemias Queta, whose performance at EuroBasket helped him gain momentum ahead of the season. He showcased impressive skills, averaging 15.5 points, 8 rebounds, 1.7 blocks, and 1 steal across 24 minutes over six games. Queta notably held his own against top talents, including Kristaps Porzingis and Nikola Jokic. With much of Boston’s center depth leaving this offseason, there will be substantial opportunities for Queta to significantly increase his playing time and prove himself as a reliable contributor. His experience thus far hints at the potential for a major development this year.

However, not all eyes are on Queta; several former members of the Minnesota Timberwolves have also been spotlighted. Luka Garza is expected to fight for playing time, emphasizing his ability to defend effectively. Josh Minott has also garnered attention for his potential impact as a small-ball forward.

Emerging Players

Jordan Walsh, at only 22, created buzz last season for his readiness to play, though he didn’t capitalize on the opportunity. Having recently appeared on a Celtics podcast, Walsh expressed confidence that resonates with fans; if he channels the intensity displayed during Summer League, this could be his breakout year as he enters his third professional season.

Baylor Scheierman, another recent draft pick, has caught the eyes of our panel as well. If he can establish a consistent role, many believe he could convert sporadic shooting into viable performance, primarily supported by his passing abilities showcased in the Summer League.

Panel Insights

Each panel member expressed strong opinions. Managing Editor Darren Hartwell highlighted Scheierman for his potential based on improved playing time and shooting consistency. Web Producer Michael Hurley pointed to Queta, acknowledging his increased minutes demand and the necessity for improvement across various facets of his game. Other contributors, like Sean McGuire and Josh Canu, concurred that Scheierman’s role could expand considerably if he addresses his defensive lapses, while Content Producer Max Lederman noted that Scheierman’s prior performances suggest he will thrive with more chances. Furthermore, Kevin Miller opted to spotlight Josh Minott, anticipating more production with additional minutes.

Conclusion

Ultimately, while Queta appears to have the most significant opportunity, the competition among these promising players is fierce, with each poised to capitalize on the evolving roster dynamics as they strive to become key factors for the Celtics in the upcoming season.
