Thrilling Game 5 Victory
In a thrilling Game 5 of the playoffs, the Cleveland Cavaliers surged to a 125-120 victory over the Toronto Raptors, largely thanks to the leadership and performance of Dennis Schroder. The Cavs faced a challenging first half, trailing 74-67 at the break after the Raptors had built momentum by winning the previous two games.
Schroder’s Leadership
However, with the stakes high in front of their home crowd, Schroder took it upon himself to reinvigorate his teammates in the locker room, emphasizing the importance of returning to their roots of playing strong, aggressive basketball through key players like Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen.
Fourth Quarter Comeback
As the fourth quarter began, the Cavaliers were down by three points at 103-100, but Schroder’s determination became a game-changer. He scored 11 of his total 19 points during these critical moments, shooting an impressive 5-of-8 from the field in the final quarter to fuel a 25-17 run against Toronto. Notably, this marked the first playoff victory for the Cavaliers after trailing entering the fourth quarter since 2018.
“I felt like I needed to say something to motivate the team so we could elevate our performance to the standards the Cavs are known for,”
said Schroder, who joined the team in a trade earlier this year.
Cleveland’s coach, Kenny Atkinson, highlighted Schroder’s experience in high-pressure situations, which made him an essential asset in crucial games like this one.
Team Effort and Improvement
While Schroder shined on the court, other players like Donovan Mitchell and Mobley recognized the value of keeping him in the game when given the chance.
“It’s about the collective effort,”
Mitchell noted. “We’re doing what’s working, and Dennis is on fire. We stick with the hot hand.”
Cleveland’s performance in the second half was significantly improved; after struggling with turnovers that led to 23 points for Toronto in the first half, they tightened their game to commit only five turnovers, including just one in the decisive fourth quarter.
Looking Ahead
Despite having limited playing time earlier in the series, Schroder’s playoff enthusiasm was evident:
“I thrive in big moments like these,”
he expressed after the game.
This victory not only gave the Cavaliers a 3-2 lead in the series but also helped them regain momentum as they head into Game 6, set for Friday in Toronto. Atkinson reflected on the significance of this match, stating it was a crucial step toward building the resilience needed for a deep playoff run.
