Cavaliers Forward Evan Mobley Likely to Miss Time with Calf Strain

Cleveland Cavaliers Face Injury Setback

The Cleveland Cavaliers have been on a positive trajectory lately, showcasing solid performances; however, their momentum has taken a hit with the news of yet another injury to a key player. Forward Evan Mobley, a former All-Star and last season’s Defensive Player of the Year, has been diagnosed with a left calf strain after sustaining an injury during the Cavaliers’ recent victory over the Orlando Magic. An MRI conducted on Wednesday confirmed the strain, which will likely keep him off the court for a duration of one to three weeks.

Previous Injuries and Current Challenges

This is not the first time Mobley has faced calf issues this season, as he encountered a similar Grade 1 strain on December 12, which sidelined him for nearly two weeks. The Cavaliers are treading cautiously due to the frequency of calf injuries around the league, which have become quite common given the high-intensity pace of NBA games.

Impact on Upcoming Games

The timing of Mobley’s setback is particularly unfortunate, as it aligns with an upcoming stretch of games. The Cavaliers already find themselves without point guard Darius Garland, who is nursing a toe injury, and are preparing for a significant road trip through the Western Conference that begins on Friday. Should Mobley’s recovery take the full three weeks, he risks missing a total of seven games, including clashes against formidable opponents like the Los Angeles Lakers, Phoenix Suns, and Portland Trail Blazers.

All-Star Game Considerations

Beyond just regular season games, Mobley’s injury could also hinder his participation in the NBA All-Star Game, should he be selected. Additionally, if he returns before the All-Star break, the Cavaliers might prefer to err on the side of caution, weighing the risks of an exhibition game against the potential for further injury.

Currently, the Cavs have managed a 3-3 record in his absence, with Mobley averaging 17.9 points, 8.8 rebounds, and four assists across 42 games this season.
