Detroit Free Press Girls Prep Athlete of the Week

As the week draws to a close, it’s time to cast your votes for the Detroit Free Press Girls Prep Athlete of the Week, covering the period from May 25 to May 31. This week, four outstanding athletes have been nominated for their remarkable achievements in sports, showcasing talents from both tennis and track and field.

Voting will remain open until 11:59 a.m. on Thursday, June 5, with the winner set to be revealed shortly after voting ends.

Nominees

  • Carrie VanNoy, Oak Park (Track and Field): This senior standout showcased her speed and agility, clinching state titles in both the 110m and 300m hurdle events. Her contributions significantly aided Oak Park in securing the Division 1 team championship, alongside her performances in the 4x100m and 4x200m relay teams.
  • Nicole Fu, Rochester Adams (Tennis): After finishing as the runner-up in the No. 1 singles category for three consecutive years, Fu finally achieved victory this season by winning the Division 1 championship. She triumphed over the previous year’s titleholder, Gabby Sadowski from Eisenhower, in a thrilling two-set match that echoed last year’s finals.
  • Jada Josifovski, Birmingham Seaholm (Tennis): The junior athlete made waves by securing the Division 2 No. 2 singles title, besting her opponent Keira Kirkland from Farmington Hills Mercy. Remarkably, Josifovski did not drop a single set in her quest for the championship, playing a pivotal role in leading her team to its first title in two years.
  • Samantha Karoub, North Farmington (Tennis): Completing an impressive undefeated season, Karoub emerged as the Division 3 state champion, echoing Josifovski’s achievement by also not losing a set in her tournament matches.
