Carragher Raises Alarm Over Salah’s Role in Liverpool’s Struggles

Concerns Over Mohamed Salah’s Role

Jamie Carragher, a former defender for Liverpool, has raised concerns about the role of Mohamed Salah on the team, highlighting that it’s time for the star forward to reconsider his position in the starting lineup. Following a remarkable season where Liverpool clinched the Premier League title and Salah secured a new contract, the current campaign has not been as fruitful for him, with only four goals in league play.

Defensive Contributions Under Scrutiny

Carragher’s critique comes alongside that of Wayne Rooney, another former footballer, who pointed out that Salah’s lack of defensive contribution is becoming problematic, particularly when it comes to protecting right-back Conor Bradley. This issue was glaringly evident during the 3-0 loss to Manchester City. Rooney emphasized the need for team players to defensively support each other, stating that opposing teams have begun to exploit Liverpool’s right flank due to Salah’s insufficient defensive efforts.

“Teams have recognized this vulnerability, and Salah’s unwillingness to track back is leaving his teammates, especially Bradley, in a difficult position,” Rooney remarked on The Overlap.

Call for Change

Carragher echoed this sentiment, questioning the effectiveness of allowing Salah to remain high up the pitch without contributing defensively.

“If you’re not helping at the back while your team is struggling to score, then you’re obtaining no benefit from having Salah maintain a forward position,” he noted.

The former Liverpool player suggested that either Salah needs to increase his defensive work rate, or the team may need to consider alternative starting options. Carragher concluded that the trend of relying on Salah to start every match, particularly in away games, should come to an end.
