Caroline Wozniacki’s Return to Tennis
Caroline Wozniacki recently shared her thoughts on the possibility of returning to the WTA Tour after a significant hiatus from professional tennis. The former world No. 1 initially retired following the 2020 Australian Open—a fitting farewell after winning her lone Grand Slam title there in 2018, having come close multiple times in previous years, including two heart-wrenching losses at the US Open.
Life After Retirement
Since her retirement, Wozniacki embraced motherhood with the birth of her daughter in 2021 and her son in 2022 alongside her husband, David Lee. This new family dynamic led many to believe that a return to competitive tennis was quite unlikely. Surprisingly, in 2023, Wozniacki made a comeback to the sport, astounding fans as she progressed to the fourth round of that year’s US Open after a prolonged absence.
Her most recent tournament appearance occurred at the 2024 US Open, where she again reached the round of 16, before stepping back from tennis once more following the announcement of her second pregnancy. Max was born on July 26, 2025.
Balancing Family and Tennis
For the past year, Wozniacki has enjoyed a low-key life, but she recently made an appearance on the Nothing Major Podcast, featuring hosts John Isner, Sam Querrey, Jack Sock, and Steve Johnson. During the talk, Wozniacki was asked about the likelihood of a second return to professional tennis. She candidly discussed the challenges of balancing her family life with tennis, indicating that while it’s not out of the question, the demands of raising three young children make it improbable.
“With three small kids, it’s already like a full-time job,” she remarked.
Although she mentioned that her husband would encourage her to consider competing again, Wozniacki expressed contentment with her current situation and her enjoyment of working in television.
“I have enjoyed it, and it allows me to maintain a good balance between work and family life,” she explained.
Challenges Ahead
At 35, Wozniacki’s potential return to the court after an extensive break poses significant challenges, but she acknowledged that the remarkable comeback of fellow tennis great Venus Williams, who is competing at 45, demonstrates that such milestones are not entirely unattainable.
Controversy and Criticism
Recently, Wozniacki also conveyed her frustration toward Danish commentator Peter Bastiansen. After he mockingly dismissed her potential return as a gimmick, she took to social media to denounce his comments, accusing him of bullying her through his commentary for over two decades. Bastiansen, while acknowledging her criticisms, maintained a professional tone, suggesting that Wozniacki is entitled to her viewpoint. However, many felt his comments were unnecessarily harsh and could have been articulated more thoughtfully, perhaps stirring controversy for the sake of headlines rather than substantive critique.
