Carlos Alcaraz Reclaims World No. 1 Ranking
After a two-year interlude, Carlos Alcaraz has once again ascended to the pinnacle of the ATP rankings, reclaiming the title of world No. 1. This milestone marks a significant achievement in his career, as it echoes his initial rise to the top spot in 2022, shortly after he captured his first Grand Slam title at the US Open. With a triumphant return to the tournament, where he secured his second US Open championship, Alcaraz’s victory not only solidified his standing but also propelled him back into the number one position on the global tennis stage.
Ranking Changes and Performance
Previously, Alcaraz relinquished the top ranking on September 10, 2023, when Novak Djokovic overtook him. Djokovic maintained this rank for 39 weeks before Jannik Sinner took over, enjoying a reign of 65 weeks, which has now ended following his loss in the US Open final. Having resumed his place at the summit of the rankings, Alcaraz currently holds 11,540 ranking points, significantly ahead of Sinner, who has accumulated 10,780 points and will need to defend his points in the remaining tournaments of the season.
In terms of performance this year, Alcaraz has amassed 10,540 points while Sinner trails with 7,950 points. The standings reveal a notable gap to Alexander Zverev, who sits in third with 5,930 points but has seen a decrease of 300 points compared to last year. Zverev, however, has a comfortable lead over fourth-ranked Djokovic, who, despite reaching the semi-finals of the US Open and climbing three places to No. 4, is expected to fall down the rankings soon, as he has only one ATP 250 event left in Greece lined up for 2025.
Top Players and Rankings
Taylor Fritz, currently ranked fifth, has seen a slight dip, losing one position with 4,675 points, and remains in a competitive chase for the title of top American player. Close behind, Ben Shelton ranks sixth with 4,280 points.
Meanwhile, Jack Draper’s withdrawal from the tournament has resulted in a drop in his rankings, positioning him seventh with 3,690 points. Alex de Minaur follows closely behind in eighth with 3,545 points, while Lorenzo Musetti occupies the ninth spot with 3,505 points. Rounding out the top 10 is Karen Khachanov, who holds 3,280 points.
Noteworthy Performances
Noteworthy is the resurgence of Felix Auger-Aliassime, who had struggled in recent months but made a remarkable comeback in New York, rising 14 spots to claim the No. 13 position with 2,755 points, matching the points total of Casper Ruud ahead of him. In contrast, Frances Tiafoe’s inability to defend his semi-final points from last year has seen him slide down to No. 29 following his exit in the third round this year.
