The US Open: Carlos Alcaraz Advances to Quarterfinals
The US Open continues to be a formidable stage for Carlos Alcaraz, the No. 2 seed, who effortlessly advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Arthur Rinderknech with a score of 7-6 (3), 6-3, 6-4 on Sunday afternoon at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
This victory marks a significant milestone for the 22-year-old Spanish tennis sensation, as he has now reached the quarterfinals of a major event for the 13th time, equaling the record held by Boris Becker for the most quarterfinals reached by a male player before turning 23 years old during the Open era.
Alcaraz’s Dominance at the Tournament
Alcaraz’s remarkable run at the tournament is characterized by his dominance on the court; he has not lost a single set in the competition thus far and boasts an impressive record of winning 54 out of 55 service games, having faced only eight break points throughout the tournament.
“I think my style of tennis fits pretty well to the energy here in New York,” Alcaraz remarked on his strong performances at Flushing Meadows, adding, “I just love it, I think that’s why I play my best tennis here.”
Adding to his impressive credentials, Alcaraz has won 34 out of his last 35 matches on the tour, including a current streak of 10 victories since his defeat to world No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon finals. His win in this match also marks his 21st victory at the US Open, making him one of the top performers in the tournament’s Open era; only John McEnroe (28) and Lleyton Hewitt (23) have more wins in their first five appearances.
Looking Ahead
Rinderknech, who made his way to the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career, previously showcased his talents at Texas A&M in college tennis. Alcaraz’s next challenge will be against No. 20 seed Jiri Lehecka, who managed to secure his own spot in the quarterfinals earlier on the same day by overcoming Adrian Mannarino with a score of 7-6 (4), 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.
