Canucks Set Their Sights on Shane Doan as Potential GM Replacement

Vancouver Canucks Seek New General Manager

In the aftermath of the Vancouver Canucks parting ways with their General Manager Patrik Allvin, the organization is actively seeking a new leader for its front office. Just a day after mentions of former Buffalo Sabres GM Kevyn Adams arose, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman has reported that the Canucks have reached out to interview Shane Doan, a renowned figure in the hockey community.

Shane Doan’s Background

Currently serving as a Special Advisor to the GM for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Doan has a distinguished background in the NHL, having played over 1,500 games, primarily with the Arizona Coyotes, where he also held the position of team captain for an impressive 13 seasons before retiring in 2017.

Doan’s Administrative Journey

In addition to his on-ice career, Doan has ventured into hockey administration. He began this journey in the 2018-2019 season, initially serving as a consultant for Team Canada. His involvement expanded over the years, culminating in his role as General Manager during the 2022 Winter Olympics and his appointment as Director of Hockey Administration with the Coyotes. Following this, he took on his current advisory position with the Maple Leafs for the ongoing 2023-24 NHL season.

Recently, it was also reported by TSN’s Pierre LeBrun that Doan has joined the NHL’s Hockey Operations team, which adds another layer to his expanding influence in the league.

Future Prospects for the Canucks

The Canucks are reportedly keen to have their new GM secured by the time the 2026 NHL Draft Lottery arrives, scheduled for May 5. Alongside Adams, Abbotsford Canucks GM Ryan Johnson is among those speculated to be in contention for the role. As the team navigates this transitional phase, they look to enhance their management structure to support future success.
