Preparation for the Prospect Showdown
As preparation intensifies for the upcoming Prospect Showdown, Laval Rocket head coach Pascal Vincent continues to put the Montreal Canadiens’ rookie players through the paces. After emphasizing defense on the first day of practice, Vincent shifted focus to offensive strategies on the second day, which took place on Friday.
Offensive Drills and Line Configurations
The coaching staff implemented a series of fast-paced drills aimed at replicating game conditions, including two-on-two skirmishes and four-on-two scenarios that particularly emphasized competing for position in front of the net.
Alongside drills for offensive plays, the team also concentrated on enhancing their transition game—focusing on puck retrieval, making effective first passes, and quickly transitioning the puck to other forwards. A notable line configuration has emerged, pairing center Oliver Kapanen with wings Florian Xhekaj and Ivan Demidov, who are anticipated to represent the Canadiens’ primary line during the weekend matchup.
Coach Vincent’s decision to feature Xhekaj, known for his physical play since being drafted, may offer some additional protection to Demidov, a highly regarded prospect, against rival teams.
Power-Play Strategies
The first power-play unit—likely to include Kapanen, Demidov, and Xhekaj, along with Owen Beck and David Reinbacher—was actively working through various power play strategies, indicating that this lineup might remain consistent through the next match. Meanwhile, a secondary unit is being formed with Adam Engstrom, Vinzenz Rohrer, Alex Tuck, Tyler Thorpe, and Filip Mesar.
Interestingly, Mesar, who had been advised to incorporate more grit into his game during last season’s exit meetings, expressed a desire to engage in fights during this season, a sentiment that elicited a humorous response from coach Vincent.
Skill Development and Upcoming Matchup
As practice approached its conclusion, members of the first power-play unit engaged in puck circulation exercises, hinting at the potential threat they pose to opponents. In a show of skill development, Xhekaj dedicated time to perfecting his deflection techniques, akin to the practice habits of veteran Brendan Gallagher from previous seasons. His heightened physical prowess is expected to be a source of concern for opposing goaltenders and defensemen alike.
Ahead of the Montreal Canadiens’ matchup against the Winnipeg Jets, coach Vincent announced that Jacob Fowler will take to the ice as the starting goalie. The Jets, bolstered by a formidable roster including Brayden Yager—drafted 14th overall by the Penguins in 2023—are expected to provide a serious competitive challenge.
