Canadiens’ Recent Trade Candidates Show Mixed Progress in New Roles

Trade Speculation and Surprise Announcement

Last summer, speculation arose regarding a potential transaction involving the Montreal Canadiens and the St. Louis Blues with an eye on acquiring Jordan Kyrou, a winger sought after by many. However, the eventual announcement of a trade surprised fans as it involved two different players: Zachary Bolduc, a forward, and Logan Mailloux, a right-shot defenseman aged 22.

Player Performances

Bolduc, now 23, has made his mark since joining the Canadiens. He has logged 59 appearances with the team, scoring 10 goals along with 14 assists for a total of 24 points. Recently, he did experience a brief setback, being a healthy scratch in one game last week. His current stats also reflect a tally of 24 penalty minutes alongside a minus-nine rating.

Conversely, Mailloux has seen action in both the AHL and NHL, participating in five games with the Springfield Thunderbirds and 46 games with the Blues. The young defenseman has netted a total of two points while in Springfield and has fared reasonably well in the NHL, contributing three goals and two assists, culminating in five points overall. Remarkably, during his last five outings, Mailloux has scored twice, taken 13 shots, landed eight hits, blocked five shots, and boasts a plus-five differential while playing on St. Louis’ second defensive pairing.

Recent Struggles and Future Potential

On the flip side, Bolduc has struggled recently, contributing only two assists in his past five games, alongside a minus-one rating. Although he took minimal shots, he did engage physically, hitting opponents 13 times, all while working within the Canadiens’ bottom six alongside teammates Jake Evans and Alex Newhook.

The question arises: should the Canadiens regret this trade? It’s still too soon to assess the long-term implications, as both Bolduc and Mailloux are in the early stages of their careers and have ample room for development. Transitioning to the Canadiens’ system under the guidance of head coach Martin St-Louis means Bolduc must adapt to a new style that emphasizes strategic play over rigid systems—an adjustment that will take time.

As Bolduc embarks on his inaugural complete season in the NHL, the potential for growth is substantial. While the Canadiens presently require more depth in their defensive lineup, they have promising prospects like David Reinbacher and Bryce Pickford waiting in the wings. If Bolduc matures into the player the organization envisions through St-Louis’ mentorship, both teams could come out ahead in this trade.
