Canadiens Call Up Goalie Jacob Fowler as Montembeault Struggles

Montreal Canadiens Promote Jacob Fowler

In response to the challenges faced by their goaltending staff, the Montreal Canadiens have made a strategic decision to promote Jacob Fowler from the Laval Rocket. This comes as the team gears up for a week that includes two consecutive games, while Samuel Montembeault has struggled to regain his form. Given that Jakub Dobes took the ice last night, Fowler may have the opportunity to step into the lineup as soon as tonight against the Ottawa Senators, marking what would be his 11th appearance in the NHL.

Fowler’s Performance

During his previous stint with the Canadiens last December, the 21-year-old goaltender showcased his potential, recording a 4-4-2 record, a 2.62 goals-against average, and a .902 save percentage, which included an impressive shutout against the Pittsburgh Penguins. In the AHL this season, Fowler has played 27 games, winning 19 while losing seven in regular time and one in overtime, alongside three shutouts.

Strategic Changes

Initially, the Canadiens intended for Fowler to remain in the AHL for the entire season; however, the current goaltending issues, coupled with the trade deadline passing, have altered those plans. The absence of a roster limit allows Montreal the flexibility to keep Fowler on the big club for an extended period while maintaining compliance with the salary cap.

Urgent Need for Improvement

This decision reflects the urgent need for the Canadiens to improve their netminding, as every point counts significantly in their bid for a playoff spot. Montembeault has been working closely with goaltending coach Marco Marciano to enhance his performance, but the team’s support appears to be waning due to his inconsistent play. Although there are currently no plans to waive Montembeault, this situation may accelerate the decision-making process regarding the Canadiens’ goaltending future, especially with all three of their goaltenders declared healthy.
