Calvin de Haan Reflects on His NHL Journey and Desire to Play for the Ottawa Senators

Calvin de Haan’s Transition to Sweden

Calvin de Haan, the veteran defenseman with a decorated NHL history, experienced significant change during the 2025-26 hockey season. After spending years as a reliable player in the NHL, where he was originally selected in the first round by the New York Islanders, the now 35-year-old took his talents to Sweden, joining Rögle BK Ängelholm in the country’s premier hockey league.

Challenges in the NHL

De Haan’s decision to make the leap to Europe came about after an extensive career that saw him rack up 679 NHL games with various teams, including a recent stretch that left him searching for opportunities following a brief stint with the New York Rangers last season.

His time in New York was tumultuous, ending with him being benched by coach Peter Laviolette after initially showing promise in his first three outings with the team. Despite contributing to a solid 4-0 victory against both Nashville and the Islanders, and narrowly losing to Washington in overtime, de Haan found himself sitting on the sidelines for the remainder of the season without scoring a goal during his time on the ice.

Frustrated, he shared his feelings publicly, expressing dissatisfaction with the handling of his situation, which garnered attention and could have influenced how NHL teams viewed him moving forward.

Success in Sweden

Yet, these challenges are now behind him as de Haan reflects on a successful season abroad, leading his new team to the finals against Skellefteå AIK. He praised the high caliber of play in Sweden and remarked on the positive reception he received from management, culminating in a two-year contract extension following his initial one-year deal.

Dreams of Playing for Ottawa Senators

On a recent episode of the ‘Coming in Hot’ podcast, hosted by Brent Wallace and Jason York, de Haan revealed his long-standing desire to play for the Ottawa Senators, his hometown team. He reminisced about his admiration for the early 2000s Senators squads that he grew up watching and highlighted his attempts to sign with the team over the years, particularly after his previous contract with Chicago.

Despite his efforts, the fit wasn’t deemed right by Senators’ management, specifically by Pierre Dorion and Steve Staios.

Looking Ahead

De Haan remains optimistic about his career in Sweden, where he’s successfully carving out a new chapter, while also reflecting fondly on opportunities missed at home. For now, his focus is on enjoying the game at a different level and embracing the support he has found with Rögle BK.
