Calvin de Haan Secures Contract Extension with Rögle BK
In a notable development in European hockey, Calvin de Haan has secured a two-year contract extension with Swedish club Rögle BK, as announced on Friday. The Canadian defenseman, now 34 years old, is currently in his inaugural season in Europe following an impressive NHL career, where he competed in over 600 games across six different teams.
Performance and Contributions
De Haan’s performance in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) has been commendable, tallying nine points in 18 games while helping Rögle secure the third position in the league, amassing 47 points from 24 contests. Rögle’s sports director Hampus Sjöström expressed his satisfaction with de Haan’s contributions, highlighting his stability on defense and leadership skills that greatly benefit the team.
“We want Calvin to continue wearing green and white, as he has been an asset to both the organization and the community here in Rögle and Ängelholm,”
Sjöström remarked.
Integration of Experienced Talent
Joining de Haan at Rögle are other former NHL players, including Mark Friedman, Karson Kuhlman, and Fredrik Olofsson, showcasing the club’s strategy of integrating experienced talent from North America.
Career Overview
De Haan’s journey began in Carp, Ontario, where he played junior hockey for the Oshawa Generals in the OHL. He was selected in the first round, 12th overall, by the New York Islanders during the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. Over his NHL career, which spanned from 2011 to 2025, he played 679 regular-season games, accumulating 149 points and serving 249 penalty minutes. His playoff experience includes five points in 38 games across various seasons.
In his previous season, de Haan played for both the Colorado Avalanche and New York Rangers after being involved in a trade that also saw him move alongside notable players and draft picks. His international experience includes representing Canada at several notable tournaments, including the IIHF U-18 World Championship and the World Junior Championships.
New Additions to Rögle BK
Simultaneously, Rögle BK has also added another former NHL talent to their ranks. American right winger Karson Kuhlman, 29, recently signed a one-year deal with the club, just days after the announcement of Mark Friedman’s signing. This influx of skilled players positions Rögle as a strong contender in the SHL, looking to make a significant impact this season.
