Callum Smith vs. David Morrell Fight Postponed
Callum Smith’s upcoming fight against David Morrell, initially slated for April 18 at Liverpool’s M&S Bank Arena, has been postponed due to an injury, as confirmed by Matchroom Boxing on Monday. As a result, light heavyweight contender Ben Whittaker will now take the main event position, facing off against Braian Nahuel Suarez in place of Smith and Morrell. Adding to the card, former UFC fighter Molly McCann will also appear.
Smith’s Injury and Title Defense
Smith, who boasts a record of 31 wins, 2 losses, and 22 KOs, was set to defend his WBO interim light heavyweight title for the first time against Morrell. However, an undisclosed injury has forced him to withdraw from the match just over a week before the fight. Smith last fought in February 2025, when he clinched the interim title by defeating Joshua Buatsi in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Following this victory, the WBO mandated that Smith must defend his title against Morrell, highlighting the significance of the matchup after months of anticipation.
Morrell’s Recent Performance
Morrell, holding a record of 12 wins, 1 loss, and 9 KOs, experienced his initial defeat in February 2025 against David Benavidez, a setback characterized by a fierce contest. He rebounded with a contentious split decision win over Imam Khataev in July 2025 in New York, leading to his scheduled bout with Smith.
Future of the Matchup
The highly awaited clash between Smith and Morrell is now in jeopardy, as the WBO has expedited the situation by giving Smith ten days to provide a certified medical report addressing his injury.
Furthermore, the governing body has stipulated that the fight against Morrell must be rescheduled within 180 days following the May 30 bout between Dmitry Bivol and Michael Eifert. If Smith fails to comply, he risks losing his interim championship title.
