Calgary Flames’ Aydar Suniev Making Strides in NHL Debut

Aydar Suniev: Rising Star for the Calgary Flames

Aydar Suniev, a promising talent for the Calgary Flames, has begun to capture attention after his recent promotion from the AHL’s Wranglers. The 21-year-old forward, who was selected by the Flames in the 2023 NHL Draft as the 80th overall pick, has made his mark in just five games since his call-up. Notably, he recorded his first career NHL point, an assist, on April 12 against the Utah Mammoth.

Impressive Performance

In his latest performance against the Colorado Avalanche, Suniev not only took four shots on goal but also created several notable scoring opportunities. His contributions have not gone unnoticed; despite limited ice time, he has displayed impressive speed and capability in both offensive and defensive roles. Standing at 6 feet 2 inches and weighing 198 pounds, Suniev brings a significant physical presence to the ice along with a powerful shot, enhancing the Flames’ options on the offensive front.

Head coach Ryan Huska has commented on Suniev’s immediate impact, noting, “I thought he was dangerous, he had some really good chances for us. He’s a strong man, he’s heavy on the puck. The one thing he does really well is protect the puck and then he gets himself into positions to shoot and his shot is very good.”

Development with the Wranglers

Prior to his call-up, Suniev spent the majority of the season developing his skills with the Wranglers, where he netted 15 goals and accumulated 23 points in 55 games during his inaugural professional season. As he looks to build upon this foundation and convert his potential into consistent performance at the NHL level, his initial appearances have certainly set a positive tone for his future with the Flames.
