Caleb Wilson Shines in Homecoming
In a triumphant homecoming, Caleb Wilson showcased his skills with a remarkable performance, scoring 22 points as the 16th-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels defeated Georgia Tech with a decisive score of 91-75 on Saturday. The 6-foot-10 forward from Atlanta set an impressive new benchmark for the Tar Heels by reaching the 20-point mark for the 15th time in his freshman season, surpassing the previous record held by Tyler Hansbrough during the 2005-06 campaign.
Record-Breaking Performance
Additionally, Wilson established another milestone by scoring in double figures for an unprecedented 21 consecutive games, outdoing Rashad McCants’ record of 20 games with at least 10 points established in 2002-03. The atmosphere at McCamish Pavilion was enhanced by light snow outside, yet it did little to dampen the Tar Heels’ spirits.
Team Contributions
Classmate Henri Veesaar complemented Wilson’s efforts with a strong performance of his own, contributing 20 points and grabbing 12 rebounds, further solidifying North Carolina’s inside presence against Georgia Tech. The victory marked the Tar Heels’ third straight win, with Wilson adding to his national-leading dunk total of 62 by executing three more dunks during the game.
Game Highlights
Georgia Tech struggled as the game progressed, particularly during the latter part of the first half when Wilson delivered a couple of electrifying dunks and completed a three-point play, propelling North Carolina to a 52-37 advantage by halftime. The Tar Heels extended their lead to as much as 21 points in the second half, leaving the Yellow Jackets to grapple with their third consecutive loss, marking the sixth defeat in their last seven outings under head coach Damon Stoudamire amidst a challenging season.
Individual Performances
Baye Ndongo led the home team with an impressive 27 points; however, his teammates collectively managed to hit just 18 of 48 shots from the field. The game was attended by Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, who is an alumnus of Georgia Tech, seen wearing a cap emblazoned with “GT.”
Looking Ahead
Looking ahead, the Tar Heels will be hosting Syracuse on Tuesday before a pivotal clash with No. 4 Duke the following Saturday. Meanwhile, Georgia Tech has a challenging trip to California lined up on Wednesday as they prepare for two consecutive games on the West Coast.
