Busquets Advocates for Global Football Expansion
Inter Miami’s Sergio Busquets has expressed his desire to see football expand globally, particularly through LaLiga hosting matches in international venues. However, he emphasizes the importance of establishing clear guidelines and engaging in negotiations before proceeding with any match arrangements.
Recently, LaLiga abandoned plans to organize a match between Villarreal and Barcelona at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium, a decision attributed to backlash from fans and players in Spain. This decision was ultimately made by Relevent, the league’s North American partner.
“There seems to be a lot of confusion surrounding these initiatives. I don’t believe players are opposed to the idea, but they want transparency regarding conditions and future plans,” Busquets remarked. “It’s unreasonable for teams to be chosen randomly without any prior knowledge of what those arrangements entail or what the long-term implications might be. I think it’s wonderful for the league and the sport to expand globally, provided there’s mutual agreement on what’s beneficial for everyone involved and for its growth.”
Upcoming Challenges for Busquets
Busquets is currently facing a defining moment in his professional journey, as his team gears up for a pivotal game against FC Cincinnati in the Eastern Conference semifinals. This match, scheduled to unfold at TQL Stadium, follows a knockout format as opposed to the best-of-three series that characterized the earlier round.
“Since we found out about this setup, I’ve realized my time is limited. In the playoffs, every match is crucial since one loss can mean elimination. I’ve come to terms with that prospect, and I’m looking forward to extending my experience with at least two more matches. That would be a great way to conclude my career here, and my focus is firmly on the upcoming challenge against Cincinnati,” Busquets stated, reflecting on the impending end of his career, which he has accepted gracefully.
Recent Achievements and Future Aspirations
Inter Miami secured their spot in the knockout phases after a thrilling victory against Nashville SC, where they won a decisive third game after Nashville leveled the series. Busquets continues to approach each game with composure, despite the high stakes involved.
“I remain calm, having reconciled myself with what lies ahead. As I mentioned before, winning the next two games would mean a lot to me. I faced similar pressures just two weeks back, and I’ve learned to embrace the situation fully,” noted Busquets, who joined Inter Miami in the summer of 2023 alongside fellow stars Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba. Since then, he has celebrated major achievements with the club, including the inaugural 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2024 Supporters’ Shield, while also contributing to a record-setting season for points. As he nears the conclusion of his tenure, Busquets hopes to add one last trophy to his collection.
