Buffalo Sabres Trade Lafferty Back to Chicago Blackhawks

Buffalo Sabres Strategic Moves Ahead of Free Agency

The Buffalo Sabres have been making strategic moves in light of financial considerations as they approach free agency on Monday. During the NHL Draft’s second day, they executed a trade that involved sending a second-round draft pick and defenseman Connor Clifton to the Pittsburgh Penguins. In return, the Sabres acquired defenseman Conor Timmins and minor league player Isaac Belliveau, effectively eliminating Clifton’s $3.33 million cap obligation for the upcoming season.

Trade Involving Sam Lafferty

Additionally, the Sabres confirmed a trade involving forward Sam Lafferty, who is headed back to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2026 draft. Lafferty, 30, had initially joined Buffalo last year under GM Kevyn Adams’ strategy of bolstering the bottom-six forwards, signing a two-year deal worth $4 million after a somewhat successful tenure with the Vancouver Canucks where he scored 13 goals. However, his performance fell short of expectations in Buffalo, as he mustered only seven points (consisting of 4 goals and 3 assists) across 60 games played.

Financial Flexibility and Future Negotiations

This recent transaction not only brings Lafferty back to the Blackhawks, where he previously appeared in 97 games over two seasons, but it also delivers a cap relief of $2 million for the Sabres, enhancing their financial flexibility to nearly $23 million in available salary cap space. Buffalo must also navigate contract negotiations with several restricted free agents: Ryan McLeod, Tyson Kozak, Conor Timmins, Bowen Byram, and Devon Levi.

Speculation Around Bowen Byram

Despite these negotiations, there is speculation around Byram’s future, as Adams might explore a trade opportunity if a compelling offer arises for the 23-year-old defenseman. However, it may be prudent for the Sabres to assess the market dynamics, especially with the ongoing signings and trades involving established defensemen like K’Andre Miller and Rasmus Andersson, before making further decisions.
