Buffalo Sabres’ Strategic Moves Post-2025 NHL Draft
The Buffalo Sabres took strategic steps during and following the 2025 NHL Draft held in Los Angeles, ultimately aiming to enhance their cap flexibility ahead of the opening of free agency on July 1. However, when the market officially kicked off on Tuesday, they chose a measured approach rather than making a significant splash.
Key Signings and Contracts
Instead of high-profile signings, the team opted to secure the futures of three existing players with multi-year contracts while also bringing in free agent winger Justin Danforth and goaltender Alex Lyon with two-year deals.
Justin Danforth, previously a member of the Columbus Blue Jackets, recorded 21 points, with 9 goals and 12 assists in 61 games last season. His new contract comes with an annual average value of $1.8 million.
Meanwhile, Alex Lyon, who posted a record of 14 wins, 9 losses, and 1 overtime loss, along with a goals-against average of 2.81 and a save percentage of .896 while playing for Detroit, signed for $1.5 million per season. Sabres General Manager Kevyn Adams praised Lyon, stating:
“He’s a proven goaltender—a solid veteran with high character. His experience and performance in the league will significantly bolster our chances of winning games.”
Roster Dynamics and Future Prospects
In terms of roster dynamics, Danforth is anticipated to fill a role on the fourth line, stepping in for Sam Lafferty, who was recently traded to the Chicago Blackhawks. Lyon, now 32, will compete for ice time behind Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, alongside up-and-coming goalie Devon Levi. Although Luukkonen struggled last season, finishing with a record of 24 wins, 24 losses, and 5 overtime losses, a GAA of 3.20, and a save percentage of .887, he remains under contract for five years.
Levi, a restricted free agent this off-season, is still eligible for an exemption from waivers, which allows the Sabres to send him down to their AHL affiliate in Rochester if necessary.
If Levi performs well during training camp, there is a strong possibility that the Sabres will choose to carry three goaltenders on their NHL roster, mirroring their approach at the start of the 2023-24 season when they managed a trio of Luukkonen, Levi, and Eric Comrie.
