Buffalo Sabres Poised for Playoff Success
With less than a week remaining in the NHL’s regular season, the Buffalo Sabres find themselves in an enviable spot. The team has already secured its first trip to the playoffs since 2011 and is eyeing home-ice advantage in the postseason. Their recent dominant performance, a 5-0 shutout against the Columbus Blue Jackets, has propelled their chances to over 95% for home-ice advantage. This could be sealed if either the Montreal Canadiens or Tampa Bay Lightning falter this weekend, or if the Sabres manage to earn points in their upcoming game against the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday.
Coach Lindy Ruff’s Insights
As the Sabres prepare for their final stretch, head coach Lindy Ruff took the opportunity to refine his team at the Harborcenter. He addressed the media about several topics, including the recovery of Noah Ostlund from injury. Ruff mentioned,
“He’s progressing; it’s one of those injuries focused on pain management. The sooner that reduces, the sooner he’ll be back. I do hold out hope. He skated this morning and is working through this every day.”
When asked about the benefit of a short break before the team’s last two games, Ruff expressed his surprise at having two days off.
“It’s shocking. Initially, we considered skipping off-ice activities today, but decided there are specific areas we want to address quickly with playoffs looming. We’ll likely have just one more practice this week after tomorrow.”
Power Play Restructuring
Beyond these updates, Ruff discussed the recent restructuring of the power play, which saw Alex Tuch reinstated in a high-impact position. He noted,
“We’re experimenting with this for a game or two, fortunate to have that luxury. By shifting him back to the left side near Dahlin, we’re better positioned for effective one-timers. Our power play performed well earlier but has struggled recently, so it’s time to shake things up.”
Defensive Adjustments
Ruff also praised new addition Logan Stanley‘s performance on defense, indicating his rapid adjustments have made a positive impact.
“I’ve seen him close gaps quickly and improve his first passes. He’s played predictably and effectively kept opponents in check. Coming from Winnipeg, where he faced a larger role, he has adapted well here. He brings physicality and good skating ability, making him a strong asset as we gear up for the playoffs.”
The Sabres are in a promising position, and as they look ahead to their matchup with the Blackhawks, their focus will be on solidifying their playoff positioning.
