Buffalo Sabres GM Jarmo Kekalainen makes key hires, bringing in Marc Bergevin and Josh Flynn

Buffalo Sabres Front Office Revamp

In a decisive move to revamp the Buffalo Sabres’ front office, newly appointed general manager Jarmo Kekalainen has announced the hiring of former Montreal Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin and Josh Flynn to his executive team. These appointments were confirmed by the Sabres on Sunday, marking a swift start for Kekalainen in his role, particularly following the firing of Jason Karmanos, the team’s assistant GM, just one day prior.

Kekalainen’s Leadership

Kekalainen stepped into the position on Monday after the dismissal of Kevyn Adams, amid concerns that the Sabres are on track to extend their renowned playoff drought to a record 15 consecutive years. His experience as a former general manager of the Columbus Blue Jackets and more recent responsibilities as a senior advisor in Buffalo places him in a strong position to lead the transformation.

“Both Marc and Josh bring significant, varied experiences and insights that will greatly benefit our organization,” Kekalainen expressed.

Marc Bergevin’s Role

Bergevin has been assigned the role of associate GM and will act as Kekalainen’s primary advisor. His tenure with the Canadiens from 2012 to 2021 saw the team compete in the playoffs six times, culminating in a Stanley Cup Final appearance in 2021. Prior to that, his roles included player personnel and scouting with the Chicago Blackhawks.

Kekalainen praised Bergevin’s capability in talent evaluation, remarking, “Marc’s extensive experience as a general manager and his proven skills in identifying talent are essential as we aim to develop our roster.”

Josh Flynn’s Contributions

Josh Flynn will assume the role of assistant GM, having worked previously with Kekalainen at the Blue Jackets, where his expertise encompassed salary cap management and strategic planning. Kekalainen indicated that Flynn’s meticulousness and understanding of league dynamics will be pivotal in enhancing the Sabres’ operational support.

Flynn’s responsibilities will closely mirror those of Mark Jakubowski, Buffalo’s current assistant GM. With the exit of Karmanos, it is anticipated that Jakubowski will shift his focus toward the management of the Sabres’ AHL affiliate in Rochester. Additionally, Kekalainen has confirmed the retention of Jerry Forton in his position as the team’s chief amateur scout, providing stability amid the changes.
