Rasmus Dahlin Returns to the Buffalo Sabres
Rasmus Dahlin, the captain of the Buffalo Sabres, has resumed his role with the team after taking time away to support his fiancée, Carolina Matovac, during her recovery from a heart transplant in Sweden. The 25-year-old defenseman returned just in time for the Sabres’ matchup against the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night.
Matovac’s Health Crisis
Dahlin’s journey back to the ice comes in the wake of a serious medical crisis that began during a vacation in France last summer. Matovac suddenly suffered from heart failure, necessitating urgent medical attention. Following her transplant, she has been recuperating in Sweden while Dahlin originally commenced the season without her. He rejoined the club on November 7th after a period by her side.
“She’s an absolute warrior,” Dahlin remarked about Matovac, acknowledging her strength and resilience through her health battle. “She grinds every day, and she gets better every day.”
Impact on the Team
Head coach Lindy Ruff expressed excitement over Dahlin’s return, emphasizing the positive impact it has on the team.
“Anytime you get your captain back, it’s a jolt for the team, and I think everybody was excited to see him,”
Ruff stated, highlighting the morale boost their captain’s presence brings.
Dahlin’s Performance
Dahlin has been a pillar of the Sabres since being drafted first overall in 2018 and is now in his second season as captain, playing a crucial role in the team’s defensive lineup. Despite the personal challenges posed by Matovac’s health situation, he has maintained an impressive performance, contributing nine points over the first 14 games while averaging more than 24 minutes of ice time per game, showcasing both his talent and dedication to the team.
