Bruce Cassidy’s Frustration Over Job Opportunities
In a recent episode of the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast, Bruce Cassidy, who was previously the head coach of the Vegas Golden Knights, expressed his frustration over not being able to pursue job opportunities with other NHL teams. Following his dismissal from the Golden Knights with just eight games remaining in the regular season, Cassidy revealed that both the Edmonton Oilers and Los Angeles Kings had sought permission to interview him, but those requests were denied by the Vegas management.
“I want to go to work. I’m a hockey coach,”
he stated, emphasizing his eagerness to continue his career in hockey despite the setback.
Contractual Restrictions and NHL Coaches Association Response
Cassidy, who led the Golden Knights to their first Stanley Cup victory in 2023 and was also the franchise’s longest-serving coach, noted that his contract includes a common clause that restricts even fired coaches from interviewing with other teams without the former club’s approval. He mentioned that this clause can prevent a coach from making quick moves to a more favorable situation in the middle of the season.
The NHL Coaches Association has publicly criticized the Golden Knights for their decision to prevent Cassidy from interviewing with potential employers, deeming it “unprecedented” if multiple teams were to be denied the opportunity to speak with him. They stated their commitment to protecting the rights and interests of their members in such situations.
Golden Knights’ Focus on the Playoffs
In light of the playoffs, Golden Knights general manager Kelly McCrimmon defended the organization’s position, reiterating that their immediate focus lies in the pursuit of the Stanley Cup. Prior to the team’s appearance in the Western Conference finals, McCrimmon emphasized that Cassidy understood the current priorities of the franchise.
The Golden Knights are set to begin their playoff series against either the Carolina Hurricanes or the Montreal Canadiens on June 4, continuing their journey toward claiming another championship title.
