Marquette University Women’s Tennis Program: A New Era
At Marquette University, significant changes are underway in the women’s tennis program, marked by the appointment of Brett Barnett as the new head coach. Athletic director Mike Broeker officially revealed this news on Wednesday, highlighting Barnett’s extensive experience from his previous role at the University of South Dakota, where he led the women’s tennis team since 2014.

His track record at South Dakota included guiding the team to national rankings and multiple trips to the Summit League Tournament finals, alongside significant academic achievements. Now, Barnett faces the challenge of elevating Marquette’s standings in the Big East, where the program has struggled historically.
Organizational Changes in the Tennis Division
The transition in the coaching staff coincides with broader organizational changes in Marquette’s tennis division. In 2018, the University restructured its tennis programs, placing Steve Rodecap as the Director of Tennis amidst a shift to provide better oversight of both men’s and women’s teams. However, this approach adjusted after Rodecap’s departure in August 2023, shortly after the announcement to reinstate athletic scholarships for both tennis teams, thanks to the significant financial support from the Sprovieri family, amounting to $4 million.
