Brentford FC Rejects Bid for Yoane Wissa
Brentford FC has rejected a £25 million bid from Newcastle United for forward Yoane Wissa. Despite this setback, Newcastle remains keen on acquiring the 28-year-old player, particularly since they are reportedly no longer pursuing Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike, who looks set to sign with Liverpool.
Wissa’s Future and Previous Interest
Wissa, who has recently returned from a pre-season training camp in Portugal, is currently engaged in discussions about his future with Brentford’s management. Interestingly, Nottingham Forest has also previously attempted to secure Wissa’s services, having had at least one bid turned down earlier this summer, following an unsuccessful approach in January.
Brentford’s Valuation and Squad Changes
Brentford has placed a significant valuation on Wissa, reportedly over £50 million, especially with the notable departure of Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United, raising concerns about squad stability.
Wissa joined the club from Lorient in August 2021 and has a year remaining on his contract, which Brentford can choose to extend for an additional year. He was instrumental last season, netting 19 goals in the Premier League.
Transition at Brentford FC
The current situation at Brentford reflects a period of substantial transition for the club, as Thomas Frank, who played a key role in bringing Wissa to England, has left to manage Tottenham Hotspur, taking three coaching staff members with him. Other key departures from Brentford include team captain Christian Norgaard, who has signed with Arsenal.
The club appointed Keith Andrews, a former midfielder and set-piece coach, as Frank’s successor just last month, underlining a phase of significant change as Brentford looks to rebuild their squad.
