Brentford Explores Ange Postecoglou for Managerial Role Before Settling on Keith Andrews

Brentford Football Club’s Managerial Changes

Brentford Football Club recently reached out to former Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou, contemplating him as a potential successor for Thomas Frank, who transitioned to Spurs following Frank’s dismissal. This unusual consideration hinted at a potential job swap, given the timing of their managerial changes.

Initial Talks and Decision

Phil Giles, Brentford’s director of football, initiated informal talks with Postecoglou but ultimately decided against an interview, as both parties felt that pursuing this opportunity was not in their mutual interest. Alongside Postecoglou, the club also explored other managerial candidates, including Francesco Farioli, the ex-Ajax head coach, who has since accepted a position at Porto.

Rather than bringing in an external manager, Brentford opted to promote Keith Andrews, their set-piece specialist, to head coach.

Postecoglou’s Tenure at Tottenham

Postecoglou had taken the reins at Tottenham in June 2023 and achieved a commendable fifth-place finish in his inaugural season. However, his second season faced significant challenges, marked by a severe injury crisis that led to Spurs enduring 22 losses, ultimately resulting in a disappointing 17th-place finish in the league. Despite this, Postecoglou celebrated a remarkable victory in the Europa League, clinching the club’s first trophy in 17 years before his departure just two weeks later.

Andrews’ Promotion and Future Plans

Frank, who enjoyed a successful seven-year tenure at Brentford, has now stepped into the vacant position left by Postecoglou. Meanwhile, Andrews, who previously served as a set-piece coach and had a year of experience under Frank, emerged as Brentford’s preferred choice. His in-depth knowledge of the team and effective communication skills played a pivotal role in his selection.

Andrews was officially confirmed as Brentford’s new head coach on a three-year contract at the end of June. In a recent press conference, Giles addressed the decision-making process behind the hire, acknowledging the inherent risks involved in appointing a coach, but emphasizing the low-risk nature of bringing Andrews, someone already familiar with the club, into a more prominent role.

“There’s always going to be some degree of risk. It’s more risky to go and get a coach we don’t know from a club where the environment might be different or maybe people around them made them successful. This is actually quite a low-risk appointment because I know how good Keith is,”
