The New York Rangers Assign Brennan Othmann to Hartford Wolf Pack
The New York Rangers have made a significant decision by assigning Brennan Othmann to their American Hockey League affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack. This move comes after Othmann, a highly-touted first-round pick in 2021, has been on the verge of securing a spot with the NHL team for the past couple of seasons. Last year, he was among the final cuts before the season began, indicating how close he was to breaking into the Rangers’ lineup.
Othmann’s Journey and Challenges
This season started with high hopes for Othmann, who received a 22-game tryout with the Rangers in the previous campaign and returned to rookie camp eager to earn a permanent place on the roster. In a recent conversation, Othmann expressed that he had made considerable strides in his mental preparation, feeling more assured after a summer spent training alongside established NHL players.
However, despite his personal growth, these improvements did not manifest in his performance during training camp and in four preseason contests. Othmann struggled not due to a lack of talent, but because he failed to demonstrate the small but crucial details necessary for success at the NHL level. Mike Sullivan, the Rangers’ coach, highlighted the need for Othmann to refine aspects of his game, particularly in his defensive play and consistency. Sullivan noted,
“We discussed what that pathway might look like—it’s about being conscientious and paying attention to detail defensively, especially away from the puck. If he can improve these facets of his game, it will be vital for him to secure a role with the Rangers.”
Looking Forward
As training camp progressed, Othmann found himself falling behind in the competition, particularly in comparison to players like Gabe Perreault and Brett Berard. With his chances dwindling, it became evident that a trip to Hartford was imminent—a prediction that soon became reality.
Even with this setback, Sullivan reassured Othmann that this decision is not the end of his chances with the Rangers.
“I told him that today’s decision doesn’t signify a finality to his opportunity; it absolutely still exists, and we’ll continue to guide him,”
Sullivan explained.
Looking ahead, Othmann is expected to play a prominent role in Hartford, where he can hone his abilities and further develop his game. Although starting the season in the AHL was not part of his initial plan, this could ultimately serve as a beneficial step for his growth as a player. As the 2025-26 season progresses, Othmann is eager to prove his worth and showcase his potential to the Rangers’ management as he works toward returning to the NHL.
