Brennan Othmann Looks Forward to New Chapter with Flames After Rangers Trade

Brennan Othmann’s NHL Debut

Brennan Othmann is set to make his NHL debut with the Calgary Flames, following his recent acquisition from the New York Rangers. The trade, which took place on March 6, saw Othmann exchanged for Jacob Battaglia. On Saturday night, he will lace up his skates to face off against the Vancouver Canucks after being called up from the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers.

Background and Challenges

Previously, Othmann was recognized as a promising talent by Rangers president Chris Drury, who selected him as his inaugural draft pick at the helm of the organization. Yet, although expectations were high, the young forward struggled to translate his skills to the NHL level during his tenure with the Rangers, where he experienced inconsistent performance in both the NHL and the AHL.

At just 23 years old, Othmann has bounced between the Hartford Wolf Pack and the Rangers, tallying a modest total of 39 NHL appearances over the past two seasons, during which he managed to score one goal and provide two assists.

Reflections on His Time with the Rangers

Ahead of his first game with the Flames, Othmann reflected on his experiences in New York and revealed that he had actively sought a trade earlier in the season.

“With the Rangers, I felt like I just never really got going. I didn’t get the opportunity I needed. Their roster is packed with elite talent, which made it tough to break into the lineup.”

He expressed a strong desire for a new beginning, stating,

“I thought it was time for a change, and the process of finding a new home extended throughout the season. Receiving the call on trade deadline day was incredibly thrilling. It’s not that I didn’t want to be with the Rangers; I simply craved a fresh opportunity and a new organization to evaluate my game.”

Looking Ahead

While with the Wranglers, Othmann has shown promise, accumulating five assists over 10 games, and he is eager to prove himself in Calgary.
