Botafogo’s Alex Telles Defends Team’s Journey to Club World Cup Knockouts

Botafogo Advances in Club World Cup

Botafogo has silenced skeptics by securing a spot in the round of 16 at the Club World Cup, with Alex Telles expressing gratitude for the respect shown by their opponents. After a recent 1-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid, the Brazilian team managed to advance, finishing second in their group despite the loss.

Telles’ Reflections on Respect

Telles, a former Manchester United defender, articulated his surprise at the team’s underestimation, emphasizing that both Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid held them in higher regard than many commentators and supporters did.

“It’s hard to reflect on the game right now,” Telles remarked. “PSG and Atletico treated us with more respect than what we received from many fans. We executed our game plan to ensure we progressed. We proved the doubters wrong, as some thought we only came to the U.S. for a Disneyland trip. We are in the knockout rounds from one of the toughest groups.”

Upcoming Challenges and Team Captain’s Views

The next challenge for Botafogo will be against the winners of Group A, either Inter Miami CF or Palmeiras, on Saturday, while PSG will face the group’s runners-up on Sunday.

Although Antoine Griezmann’s late goal secured the win for Atletico, it did not alter the standings that allowed Botafogo to advance. Team captain Marlon Freitas highlighted the significance of their achievement, especially against two formidable European teams.

“While the defeat was disappointing, given we had opportunities, we defended well and deserved at least a draw. Conceding that goal late was tough because we aimed for first place,” Freitas shared with TV Globo. “Nonetheless, we should celebrate our progress, especially since many believed we had no chance against such elite European sides. Our performance reflects the strength of Brazilian football, as we are the South American champions, and we deserve to be recognized for that.”

Botafogo’s Path to the Club World Cup

Botafogo earned their Club World Cup berth after triumphing in the Brazilian Serie A in 2024 and clinching the Copa Libertadores title.
