Boston Celtics Trade Niang to Jazz, Welcome Boucher on New Contract

Boston Celtics Finalize Trade with Utah Jazz

In a strategic move to bolster their roster and maintain financial flexibility, the Boston Celtics have finalized a trade sending forward Georges Niang, alongside two future second-round draft picks, to the Utah Jazz for rookie RJ Luis Jr.. This trade, reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania on Tuesday, utilizes Niang’s substantial salary of over $8 million, which will be absorbed by the Jazz through their available trade exception resulting from the John Collins transaction.

Free Agency Moves

Additionally, the Celtics have made waves in the free agency market by securing forward Chris Boucher on a one-year contract worth $3.3 million, as confirmed by his agent, Sam Permut of Roc Nation. These recent changes enable Boston to maintain a position favorable in terms of salary cap, keeping them $7.8 million under the second apron after executing both the trade and signing. This strategic maneuver has also led the team to a significant reduction in potential luxury tax implications, saving them an estimated $34 million.

Transforming Payroll Structure

The Celtics have been proactive in transforming their payroll structure since the NBA draft, dramatically slashing their financial commitments from $540 million down to $239 million. Boucher, who is expected to play a vital role in the Celtics’ frontcourt, comes from the Toronto Raptors where he etched his name in history as the franchise leader in various categories including points and rebounds off the bench, and was the last player remaining from the Raptors’ 2019 championship roster.

Georges Niang’s Return to Utah

On the other side, Niang, 32, returns to the Jazz after spending four years with them from 2017 to 2021. After being acquired by Boston in the trade deal that brought Kristaps Porzingis to the Celtics from the Atlanta Hawks, he is set to transition back to Utah where he has previously showcased his skills as a career 39.9% shooter from the three-point line—averaging more than four attempts per game. As he enters his 10th year in the league, the transition marks another chapter in his professional journey.

RJ Luis Jr.’s Rookie Season

Meanwhile, Luis, a 22-year-old undrafted player from St. John’s, signed a two-way contract with Utah and will be looking to make an impact in his rookie season.
