FIFA Disciplinary Action in the Club World Cup
In a significant development from the Club World Cup, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee announced on Friday that Boca Juniors players Ander Herrera and Nicolás Figal will each face a suspension for four matches. This disciplinary action stems from their respective red cards received during the intense group stage encounter against Benfica.
Details of the Suspensions
The situation also saw Benfica’s Andrea Belotti receiving a two-match suspension due to his red card, which he incurred in the closing moments of the match last Monday. According to FIFA, the players’ suspensions are a result of breaches regarding unsporting behavior outlined in the FIFA Disciplinary Code. Specifically, Herrera and Figal were penalized for their actions, including unsporting behavior towards match officials and opponents, which warrants a minimum of four matches.
Consequences and Upcoming Matches
As a consequence of these suspensions, Boca Juniors must advance to the semifinals in order for Herrera and Figal to return to action in the tournament. Notably, Herrera’s red card was issued while he was on the sidelines, as he reacted vehemently to a referee’s decision and attempted to confront the match official Cesar Ramos. Figal received his dismissal following a tackle on Florentino Luís, and Belotti was penalized earlier in the match for bringing down Ayrton Costa.
Appeal Process and Future Matches
FIFA has clarified that all parties involved have the option to appeal against this decision by requesting the grounds behind the suspensions.
Looking ahead, Boca Juniors is set to compete against Bayern Munich Friday night at the Hard Rock Stadium, marking their second match in the group stage, while Benfica will face off against Auckland City in Orlando.
