Blues Reassign Stenberg and Lindstein to AHL as Springfield Eyes Playoffs

St. Louis Blues Reassign Rookies to AHL

In a strategic move to bolster their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the St. Louis Blues have reassigned promising rookies Otto Stenberg and Theo Lindstein to the minors. Their departure, following a lively 6-3 victory over the Minnesota Wild, is not a rebuke to their performances but rather a strategic decision to enhance the playoff potential of the Springfield Thunderbirds.

Player Contributions

Both players made significant contributions during their time in the NHL. Stenberg, selected 25th overall in the 2023 draft, showcased his skills by netting three goals and assisting on another seven across 32 games, while also displaying notable defensive capabilities that impressed coach Jim Montgomery. In Monday’s match, his pivotal goal reduced the Blues’ deficit to 3-2, energizing the crowd and sparking a comeback.

Montgomery praised Stenberg’s defensive intelligence, noting, “His defensive reads are high end… his stick positioning are really high end.”

Meanwhile, Lindstein, the 29th pick in the same draft, scored two goals and provided two assists over 17 games. His backhand goal, which secured the lead at 4-3, was a highlight of his performance and emphasized his potential as he played alongside veteran defenseman Colton Parayko. In his time on the ice, he maintained a positive plus-minus rating of +6.

Thunderbirds’ Playoff Race

The Springfield Thunderbirds are currently in a heated race for playoff positioning, holding the sixth and final playoff spot in the Atlantic Division with a record of 30 wins, 31 losses, 6 overtime losses, and 2 ties (totaling 68 points). They face a critical matchup against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms on Wednesday, a game that could determine their playoff fate. A win in regulation would secure them a spot in the Calder Cup playoffs. With just three regular-season games remaining, including a final face-off against the Hartford Wolfpack and a home game against the Phantoms, the pressure is mounting on Springfield to capitalize on this opportunity.

Support from Teammates

Blues forward Pavel Buchnevich expressed admiration for the young talent, stating, “They’re good, young kids… always asking questions.” His support underscores the camaraderie and mentorship present within the Blues roster as they continue to develop their younger players.
