As the clock ticks down to the 2025 NHL Draft, Columbus Blue Jackets’ general manager Don Waddell finds himself in a pivotal position with two first-round picks at his disposal. Instead of using these selections, he seems inclined toward trades that could bolster his roster.
Trade Speculations

Notably, Marco D’Amico from RG.org reports that the Blue Jackets have maintained interest in Rasmus Andersson, a defenseman from the Calgary Flames, indicating ongoing discussions dating back to the trade deadline. “We’ll enhance our hockey club for today while being mindful of our future. If we retain both first-round picks, we aim to secure talents beneficial for the long haul. I believe something significant might transpire before the draft; if it does, fantastic. Otherwise, we will adapt accordingly.”
Goaltending Concerns
Among the Maple Leafs rumors swirling, a source close to D’Amico revealed Waddell’s keen interest in upgrading the goaltending position. There have been discussions regarding Vancouver Canucks goalie Thatcher Demko; however, with the Canucks apparently looking to extend his contract, there’s speculation surrounding Arturs Šilovs as a potential trade target. Given Vancouver’s crowded goalie situation, it could be feasible for Waddell to make a move. Nevertheless, concerns linger about Demko’s injury history, raising questions on how his acquisition might affect the roster. Meanwhile, Waddell is also faced with the dilemma of Elvis Merzļikins and his $5.4 million salary cap hit.
