Kryshak points out that Korchinski, who is approaching restricted free agency, has seen his position on the team’s depth chart decline, making him a candidate for potential trade.
Korchinski’s Current Situation
She emphasizes that the Blackhawks possess greater depth on the right side of defense, while Korchinski requires essential offensive opportunities to contribute effectively — opportunities that currently seem unattainable within the organization.
Korchinski, an important asset for the Blackhawks, was a highly regarded seventh overall pick in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, and remains one of their top prospects. Despite his promising talent, he has struggled to establish himself as a consistent player in the NHL.
Potential Trade Considerations
Should the Blackhawks opt to put Korchinski on the trading block, his age (only 21) and potential as a top-four offensive defenseman — coupled with the ability to excel on the power play — would attract significant interest from various teams.
Reasons to Retain Korchinski
However, given that the left side of the Blackhawks’ defense is not particularly strong, there are compelling reasons for the franchise to consider retaining Korchinski for another season before making any decisions about a trade. Last season, Korchinski played 13 games in the NHL, accumulating two assists and finishing with a minus-4 rating. In the AHL with the Rockford IceHogs, he produced two goals and 26 points over 53 games, indicating that while he has room for growth, his skills could still be honed within the organization before a potential new opportunity arises elsewhere.
