Blackhawks Begin Training Camp Under Jeff Blashill with Intense First Day

Chicago Blackhawks Training Camp Overview

The Chicago Blackhawks wasted no time diving into their training camp, and it was evident that head coach Jeff Blashill is setting a rigorous tone for the season ahead. On the very first day of practice, Connor Bedard and the rest of the team faced a demanding session, with Blashill actively directing the players with a flurry of commands and feedback, leaving him feeling the physical strain.

“My feet are killing me,”

Blashill chuckled on Thursday, reflecting on his return to the ice after a long absence since April.

He admitted that readjusting was tough, particularly as he navigates leading a team going through a significant rebuilding phase following a disappointing three-year run that saw the Blackhawks claim just 74 victories.

Key Objectives for Training Camp

Bedard, who recently celebrated his 20th birthday in July, is expected to be a key figure in this rebuild, as the Blackhawks prepare to be one of the youngest squads in the NHL come opening night. Critically, Blashill outlined the objectives for training camp:

  • Establish a winning culture within the team;
  • Solidify the systems that will govern their style of play;
  • Assess player positioning.

Practice Insights and Player Reactions

During Thursday’s practice, Blashill emphasized setting a foundational culture, prioritizing essential winning strategies. His focus was reflected in the high intensity and rapid pace of the drills, with little downtime allowed as players were swiftly organized for each exercise. Team captain Nick Foligno praised the approach, noting:

“I loved everything about today. It sets the tone for what Blash is going to want, what our coaching staff wants, and the standard we want to have.”

Acknowledging the demanding nature of the initial practice, Bedard pointed out that the players were prepared for the challenge, mentioning that Blashill had warned them to expect strenuous skating. He commended the focus on building a robust team culture that will shape their gameplay moving forward.

Blashill’s Coaching Experience and Team Challenges

Blashill, who previously coached the Detroit Red Wings for seven seasons with a record of 204-261-72, is eager to seize this second chance to lead an NHL franchise after being dismissed in April 2022. His recent stint as an assistant coach with the Tampa Bay Lightning has likely equipped him with invaluable insights as he faces the challenges of mentoring a younger team. Drawing on past experiences from his time in the American Hockey League, Blashill is determined to ensure that all players adhere to the right approach.

“A coach once told me that the best coaches make their players do it right, and we will do just that.”

However, not all of Blashill’s plans are fully in motion; the team is currently missing veteran goaltender Laurent Brossoit, who is recovering from offseason hip surgery and is expected to be sidelined for an extended period. In response, the Blackhawks have secured Spencer Knight in a trade with the Florida Panthers and recently extended his contract. Additionally, Arvid Soderblom will be among the goaltenders available for the upcoming season.
