Bjorn Borg shares life-threatening experience with drugs in candid interview

Bjorn Borg’s Harrowing Experience

Bjorn Borg, the renowned 11-time Grand Slam champion, recently recounted a harrowing experience that nearly cost him his life due to drug use. Known for his unshakable demeanor on the tennis court, Borg impressed fans with his calmness even during the intensity of Grand Slam finals. It might come as a surprise, then, that his post-retirement life has been marked by struggles that were hidden from public view.

Retirement and Comeback

Borg, who made the shocking decision to retire from tennis at the young age of 26 in 1982, attempted a comeback from 1991 to 1993 but ultimately stepped away from the spotlight again. For many years, he led a relatively private life until taking on the role of captain for Team Europe in the Laver Cup, which paired him against his old rival, John McEnroe, who captained Team World from 2017 to 2024. However, recent developments have shed light on a turbulent period in Borg’s life, particularly his challenges from 1982 onward.

Overdose Incident

During a candid interview with Sports News Television, Borg described a sobering incident in 1989 at a party in the Netherlands when he overdosed on drugs. He explained that he had gone to the country for an exhibition match with his father, only to end up collapsing while en route to the venue.

“I was at a cocktail dinner and ran into acquaintances from the previous year. I made poor choices and used drugs again, which led to a frightening situation the following day when I was supposed to play the final,”

Borg recounted.

He remembered telling his father that he was feeling unwell and might not make it to the match. After his father urged him to relax, Borg suddenly collapsed and woke up in a hospital room with no recollection of what happened. The doctor informed him he had narrowly escaped death, a realization that he calls his most humiliating moment.

Reflections on Shame and Support

Borg’s father, who was his steadfast supporter and friend, reportedly did not speak a word on their way back to Stockholm, a silence that spoke volumes about his disappointment. Borg expressed his shame, stating,

“To be involved in this kind of situation with my father was incredibly demeaning.”

Health Struggles and Future Insights

In the past few weeks, Borg has been open about his health struggles, including a recent cancer diagnosis, which may have influenced his decision to discuss his past drug challenges. While he has not engaged in as much commentary work as McEnroe, his insights continue to captivate fans, especially following his remarks concerning Jannik Sinner’s doping issue. Borg’s forthcoming memoir, ‘Heartbeats’, released shortly before his revelation, has added context to his journey, reflecting his desire to share his life experiences and battles.
