Benfica Presidential Elections
In the lead-up to the Benfica presidential elections set for October 25, candidate João Noronha Lopes has dismissed rumors about potentially bringing back popular coach Ruben Amorim to the club. Lopes, who is currently a frontrunner to take over the presidency from Rui Costa, acknowledged his admiration for Amorim, stating unequivocally that Bruno Lage would continue in his role as head coach should he be elected.
Comments on Ruben Amorim
During an interview with CMTV, Noronha Lopes remarked on Amorim’s current position, noting,
“Ruben Amorim is a remarkable coach, but he is under contract with Manchester United.”
He pointed out Amorim’s passion for Benfica, describing him as a fan but emphasized,
“I have not arranged any contract with him. Bruno Lage will remain our coach, and I am committed to maintaining stability at Benfica.”
Speculation and Clarifications
The speculation regarding Amorim’s potential return intensified when Noronha Lopes was spotted in the stands during Manchester United’s recent match against Manchester City, which they lost 3-0. He clarified that while he was there to watch the derby, he was not in discussions with Amorim or any Manchester City player before the game. Noronha Lopes stated,
“We traveled to Manchester to observe the derby and hold meetings for Benfica’s future, but I did not engage with either Bernardo Silva or Ruben Amorim prior to the event.”
He further declined to comment on Manchester United’s performance, stating,
“I don’t discuss the results of Manchester United.”
Ruben Amorim’s Current Situation
Ruben Amorim, who has experienced difficulties at Old Trafford, is currently navigating a challenging season, with Manchester United recording their poorest start in thirty-three years. His appointment came with high expectations, having previously achieved notable successes with clubs like Braga and Sporting CP. Despite these challenges, Amorim remains contracted with United until June 2027.
Future Ambitions for Benfica
Meanwhile, Noronha Lopes indicated that if elected, securing the return of Bernardo Silva from Manchester City would be a major ambition. He highlighted Silva as one of the top talents missing from Benfica, symbolizing the club’s spirit.
“He embodies what the Benfica supporters feel is essential, showing immense dedication and passion for our club,”
he articulated. Noronha Lopes aims to prioritize securing Silva’s return once he assumes the presidency, suggesting that a comprehensive plan for the club’s sporting future is already laid out in a detailed project.
