Ben Shelton enters ATP top 10 as he heads to Wimbledon

Ben Shelton Enters ATP Top 10

Ben Shelton, the former tennis standout from Florida, has officially entered the ATP top 10 rankings right before his third Wimbledon tournament. Notably, Shelton stands as one of three American players making the elite list, placing at No. 10 after a semifinal run in Stuttgart earlier this month, which enabled him to ascend two positions. Despite his recent back-to-back losses, he has maintained his top 10 status for a fortnight, with projections indicating a rise to No. 9 by Monday, based on ATP’s real-time rankings.

Recent Performance and Strategy

Two weeks ago, Shelton experienced a disappointing performance, exiting in the Round of 32 at the London Queen’s Club ATP 500 event, where he suffered a straight-sets defeat in his only match. Following this, he encountered another early exit at an ATP 250 event in Mallorca, Spain, despite having received a bye in his first match round. Fortunately for Shelton, the points from these tournaments will not negatively impact his ranking.

In contrast to many seasoned players who prefer to take a break before major tournaments, Shelton has opted to keep competing, hoping to stay sharp leading into Wimbledon. Although his recent record of 0-2 may appear concerning, the points have worked in his favor, and history shows that he often excels during significant competitions.

Journey to the Top

Looking back on Shelton’s ranking journey reveals a remarkable transformation. Just three years prior, he was contemplating a serious tennis career while still in his second year at the University of Florida, hovering around the top 500. Opting to pursue a professional path proved to be wise, as he saw continuous growth. In his initial year as a pro, he broke into the top 100 following a commendable performance at the ATP Masters 1000 in Cincinnati and an ATP 250 event in Atlanta, although his first Grand Slam experience at the US Open was short-lived. Fast forward to 2023, and Shelton further accelerated his ranking, entering the top 50 after the Australian Open and eventually reaching the top 20 after the US Open semifinals, closing the year ranked No. 17.

For most of last year, Shelton remained within the top 20, with notable stretches at No. 14 and a brief time at No. 13. However, following an early exit at the US Open, he slipped back to No. 17, and subsequent early exits at the ATP 1000 Paris event left him at No. 21 by year’s end.

Upcoming Wimbledon Matches

Shelton’s ascendancy continues in 2025, as he prepares to capitalize on his current ranking. His first match at Wimbledon pits him against 32-year-old Alex Bolt from Australia, who is ranked No. 179 in the world and has had a lackluster season with only one ATP match played, which ended in defeat. They will face off on July 1, exact time still to be determined, and Shelton is the overwhelming favorite.

Should Shelton triumph and reach the Round of 64, he will then take on the victor of the match between David Goffin and Rinky Hijikata. Shelton holds a favorable record against Hijikata while having yet to notch a win against Goffin. Notable potential Round of 32 opponents include Ugo Humbert, ranked No. 18, and No. 42 Gael Monfils, with intriguing matchups against players like No. 7 Lorenzo Musetti and No. 29 Brandon Nakashima possible in the fourth round, as World No. 1 Jannik Sinner leads that bracket section.

Wimbledon Journey and Future Prospects

Shelton’s journey through Wimbledon has been gradual. While he joined the ATP circuit in 2021, it took him years to fully engage with all four major tournaments. His first appearances at the US Open in 2021 and 2022 yielded limited success, but by 2023, he participated in all Grand Slam events, albeit losing in the Round of 64. His performance improved significantly in 2024, where he reached the Round of 16 after prevailing in three consecutive five-set matches—only to be halted by Jannik Sinner once more.

Recognized for his strong Grand Slam performances, Shelton’s remarkable rise in the ATP rankings can be attributed to his capabilities in these high-stakes environments. His success has positioned him near the top, with his left-handed serving style thriving particularly on grass courts. As he gears up for Wimbledon, the tennis world is keenly watching his progress, hopeful he can translate his recent ranking success into further memorable results.
