Bayern Munich Faces Goalkeeper Crisis
MUNICH (AP) — In an unexpected turn of events, Bayern Munich is facing a goalkeeper crisis, with all three of its primary keepers currently sidelined due to injuries. This predicament could pave the way for the club to field 16-year-old Leonard Prescott, a promising talent born in New York, as they prepare for their crucial Champions League clash against Atalanta.
Injury Updates
Manuel Neuer, the club’s veteran and first-choice goalkeeper, is recuperating from a calf muscle injury, which means Prescott’s role has suddenly gained significant importance. Last week, the young shot-stopper was on the bench during Bayern’s dominant 6-1 victory over Atalanta in the first leg of their round-of-16 tie, serving primarily as an opportunity for him to acclimate to a higher level of competition. Prescott, who began his football journey with Union Berlin before transferring to Bayern’s academy in 2023, has also represented Germany at the under-17 national level.
The situation worsened when Jonas Urbig sustained a concussion during the dying moments of the recent match, further depleting Bayern’s goalkeeping options. Additionally, Sven Ulreich, the backup goalie, suffered a torn right adductor muscle during a recent 1-1 stalemate against Bayer Leverkusen. Although he managed to finish the match, Bayern confirmed on Sunday that he would face an extended period on the sidelines following medical evaluation.
Looking Ahead
Should Neuer and the other keepers fail to recover in time, Prescott is likely to step into the starting role against Atalanta on Wednesday. It’s worth noting that another option, 19-year-old Jannis Bärtl, who has been involved in reserve fixtures since Leon Klanac’s injury back in December, may also be considered as an alternative, but Prescott seems to be next in line given current circumstances. The club is in a tight spot as Klanac remains out due to injury, and Daniel Peretz is currently out on loan at Southampton.
