Post-Game Reflections
Following a 6-3 victory against the Buffalo Sabres, Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar expressed his dissatisfaction with Mackenzie Blackwood‘s play, and the goaltender himself concurs with the critique. Blackwood, who is 28 years old, allowed two goals on the first six shots he faced but rebounded to make crucial saves later in the match.
Critical Moments
However, Bednar was particularly critical about Blackwood’s start, where he mishandled the puck on Buffalo’s opening goal, allowing former Avalanche player Bowen Byram to capitalize. The second goal can also be attributed to a defensive lapse, where Colorado failed to intercept a high pass from Owen Power, leading to Jordan Greenway scoring by hitting the puck midair past Blackwood.
Coach’s Confidence and Goalie Decisions
Bednar pointed out the importance of Blackwood stepping up his game, remarking that while he holds confidence in him, the current situation necessitates starting Scott Wedgewood, who has been performing excellently.
“I hate to sound cruel, but that’s a Blacky problem at this point,”
Bednar commented, emphasizing the need for a rested goalie who can provide the best chance for victory.
Blackwood’s Response
In a practice session at Family Sports Center on Saturday, Blackwood was asked whether Bednar’s thoughts influenced his motivation. He responded,
“I’m getting closer; I just need reps. I don’t need that to motivate me. He’s not wrong; it’s the truth. It’s my responsibility to take opportunities and work on my sharpness.”
Performance and Future Outlook
Blackwood, traded from the San Jose Sharks last season, acknowledged that he had missed significant training time, affecting his performance. He insisted that while his play isn’t where he wants it to be, he feels his game is improving with practice.
“Each time I get on the ice it’s an opportunity to refine your smoothness and your timing. I agree with Bedsy; it’s up to me, but it’s not extra motivation. I already knew that, so it’s more about being honest,”
he said.
Last season, Blackwood played in 37 games for the Avalanche, securing a record of 22-12-3 with a goals-against average of 2.33 and a 0.913 save percentage. This year, he holds a record of 2-0-1 with a goals-against average of 3.28 and a save percentage of 0.870 after three starts. Currently, the Avalanche lead the NHL standings with an impressive record of 12-1-5.
