Overview of the ASB Classic
The ASB Classic, set to take place from January 12 to 17, 2026, in Auckland, marks its 48th edition as part of the ATP 250 events. Renowned for consistently drawing an impressive field of competitors, this tournament faces more challenges in attracting top-tier talent compared to its Brisbane and Adelaide counterparts, primarily due to its distance from Melbourne, the venue for the Australian Open.
Historical Significance
Many legends of tennis have been past champions, including Bjorn Borg, Roy Emerson, and Rod Laver. Although the event was paused in 2021 and 2022 due to pandemic restrictions, it staged successful tournaments in the last three years, with Richard Gasquet, Alejandro Tabilo, and Gael Monfils claiming titles.
Monfils, who is set to defend his title, received a wild card entry to participate and has announced plans to retire from professional tennis in 2026.
He is not alone, as fellow veteran Stan Wawrinka will also benefit from a wild card.
Key Players to Watch
Among the anticipated players, Ben Shelton has been named the top seed and is considered a strong contender for the title. He expressed his fondness for Auckland, describing it as a comfortable setting that has proven advantageous for his performance in subsequent Australian Open tournaments.
Casper Ruud holds the second seed in Auckland, having voiced his enthusiasm for visiting New Zealand and recalling his enjoyable experiences there, although he is yet to win a match in the tournament’s main draw.
Jakub Mensik, who previously impressed by reaching the quarter-finals in 2025, is another name to watch as he aims to build upon his past achievements. Other participants looking to challenge for the trophy include Cameron Norrie, whose connection to New Zealand runs deep due to his upbringing there until 2013; he will be looking to make a mark in a place he once called home.
Additional players like Luciano Darderi, Alex Michelsen, Lorenzo Sonego, and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard will also be eager to showcase their talent in hopes of lifting the ASB Classic trophy.
