Overview of the Automated Ball-Strike System (ABS)
In a recent assessment of the new Automated Ball-Strike System (ABS) during spring training, the Oakland Athletics emerged as the leaders in successfully overturning ball and strike calls. Over the course of the initial ten days of training, they achieved a remarkable challenge success rate of 69.2%, surpassing other teams and solidifying their position ahead of the system’s regular-season rollout on March 25.
Team Performance
Following closely behind were the San Francisco Giants, who secured 66.7% of their challenges. Both the Cincinnati Reds, Miami Marlins, and San Diego Padres shared an equal third place, each with a 61.9% success rate, as announced by Major League Baseball (MLB) on Monday.
Contrastingly, the reigning World Series champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers, struggled with a low success rate of only 21.4% on their challenges related to the ABS. The Baltimore Orioles and New York Mets were not far behind, managing only 25% and 35.3% success rates, respectively, while the Texas Rangers achieved 38.1%.
Overall Statistics
Overall, during this early phase of implementation, MLB reported a combined success rate across all teams of 51.3%, with an average of 2.3 challenges per game. Leading the charge in terms of the frequency of challenges were the New York Yankees, who averaged 3.8 attempts per game and won 52.6% of those appeals. The Minnesota Twins followed with 3.6 challenges and a success rate of 58.3%.
Other notable teams included the Boston Red Sox at 3.2 challenges (success rate of 55.2%) and the Colorado Rockies at 3.0 challenges (success rate of 55.6%), both performing admirably.
Challenges and Trends
On the lower end of the spectrum, the Baltimore Orioles averaged the least number of challenges at just 1.2 per game, with the Dodgers and the Detroit Tigers not far ahead at 1.4 and 1.5 challenges respectively, the latter achieving a success rate of 46.7%.
It is noteworthy that MLB has previously trialed the ABS during last spring training, where teams achieved a 52.2% success rate on challenges with 617 successful reversing calls out of 1,182 attempts. The league has been conducting ABS testing in minor leagues since 2019. Each MLB team is granted the opportunity to challenge two calls per game, with the stipulation that a team retains its challenge if it is successful.
Future Enhancements
Similar to how video reviews for home run calls were first implemented in 2008 and expanded in 2014, further enhancements to the challenging system are anticipated. Moreover, if a game reaches extra innings and a team has exhausted its challenges, it is permitted one additional challenge for each subsequent inning that ensues after nine innings.
