Arsenal’s Champions League Struggles
After a challenging start to their Champions League campaign, Arsenal’s Alessia Russo acknowledged that the team is facing a rough patch, following a 2-1 loss to OL Lyonnes. The England forward initially put the Gunners ahead with a goal just seven minutes into the match, but defensive missteps allowed Lyon’s Melchie Dumornay to score twice before halftime.
Current Team Performance
This defeat marks Arsenal’s fourth consecutive match without a win across all competitions, matching their longest winless streak since the Women’s Super League was established. In a statement to Disney+, Russo expressed her disappointment at not securing a full three points and reflected on the team’s current mindset.
“We’re aware that we’re going through a bit of a blip right now,” she stated, emphasizing the need for self-reflection and an elevation in team standards.
Russo highlighted the issue of conceding opportunities to opponents due to preventable mistakes.
“It’s essential that we hold ourselves accountable and focus on what we can control, as it affects everyone on the field,” she explained.
Encouragingly, she mentioned that there were moments during the match that showcased the team’s potential, and she believes those positives could serve as motivation moving forward.
Looking Back and Moving Forward
Recalling the previous season, Russo noted that Arsenal also began their Champions League journey with a loss—this time to Bayern Munich—and proceeded to become champions. However, she understands that defending the title poses a tougher challenge.
“That victory is something we should channel as motivation. The hard work we put into winning that trophy is something we treasure; that feeling is unparalleled,” she remarked, adding that the setback in Lyon won’t deter their ambition.
Looking ahead, Russo acknowledged the unpredictable nature of the season, filled with both challenges and triumphs.
“We have to remain realistic about the season ahead, having experienced extreme highs and lows last season in the Champions League. It’s crucial to maintain perspective and continue to push ourselves, as we are not fond of losing or experiencing difficult moments,” she added, confident in the team’s resolve.
Arsenal’s next challenge on their Champions League itinerary is against Benfica on October 16.
