NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The inaugural day of the NCAA Division I indoor track and field championships kicked off at the Randal Tyson Track Center, with the Arkansas men’s team and the Illinois women’s team taking commanding positions at the top of the leaderboard. The Arkansas men amassed a total of 14 points, leading Virginia and Kansas, each with 13. Texas A&M followed closely with 12 points, while Kansas State rounded out the top five with 10 points.

Highlights of the Day

Highlighting the day’s events, Iowa’s Ryan Johnson shattered the men’s weight throw meet record with an impressive throw of 84 feet, 1.5 inches, marking the school’s initial title in this category. Also making headlines, Oregon’s Peyton Bair showcased his prowess in the heptathlon, scoring 3,675 points, closely following the record set by Kyle Garland during the 2023 indoor championships.

In a thrilling finish in the 5,000 meters, New Mexico’s Habtom Samuel narrowly defeated Marco Langon from Villanova, finishing in 13:36.58, just ahead of Langon’s time of 13:36.98.

Kansas junior Ashton Barkdull also made his mark by winning the pole vault with a personal best of 19 feet, 0.25 inches on his second attempt, while Texas A&M’s Aleksandr Solovev secured second place by clearing the height on his third try.

The Northern Arizona team clinched first in the distance medley relay, clocking a time of 9:19.95 thanks to a strong performance by Reinhardt Harrison, Josiah Johnson, Tor Hotung-Davidsen, and Colin Sahlman. Additionally, Tarleton State’s Likesh Sathyanathan earned a personal best long jump of 26-11.25 to claim victory, narrowly beating Southern Miss’s De’Aundre Ward.

Auburn’s Ja’Kobe Tharp turned in one of the day’s standout performances, clocking a remarkable 7.36 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles preliminaries, the second-fastest in NCAA history, just a fraction behind the record of 7.35 set by Florida’s Grant Holloway in 2019.

Women’s Competition

On the women’s side, the Illinois team surged ahead with 30 points, well ahead of Oregon’s 20 points in second. Florida (14 points), BYU (13 points), and Minnesota (10 points) followed in the rankings.

Oregon’s Liisa-Maria Lusti, a freshman, earned the pentathlon title and became the second Oregon woman to achieve this honor, following Brianne Theisen-Eaton, scoring a total of 4,498 points. She managed to outpace teammate JaCieonna Gero-Holt, who also had a commendable performance, amassing 4,466 points, setting a new school record.

Illinois junior Sophia Beckmon excelled in the long jump, reigning supreme with a jump of 21-9, positioning her second on the all-time indoor long jump list for Illinois. BYU’s Jane Hedengren made waves as well, breaking the facility record in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:00.12.

Oregon’s distance medley relay team, anchored by Wilma Nielsen, seized victory in this event with a time of 10:48.76, crossing the finish ahead of South Carolina at 10:49.69. The team featured Juliet Cherubet, Lakely Doht-Barron, and Silan Ayyildz.

In the women’s weight throw, Minnesota’s Anthonett Nabwe achieved one of the top throws in collegiate history, with an impressive performance resulting in 82-5 feet.

The championships are set to conclude on Saturday, promising more exciting athletics ahead.
