Argentina’s Soccer Association Surprises with New Title for Rosario Central

Argentina’s New League Champion Title

In a surprising move, Argentina’s soccer governing body announced on Thursday that Rosario Central has been awarded the inaugural title of “League Champion” for 2025. This unexpected recognition took many by surprise as the Argentine football league system usually comprises only two main competitions: the Apertura and Clausura, which determine the season’s victors through playoff matches.

Rosario Central’s Achievement

Star player Ángel Di María was present at the ceremony to receive the trophy. The decision by the Argentine Football Association (AFA) came after the executive committee reached a unanimous conclusion to introduce a new title based on overall points accumulated across the two tournament phases, rather than the winners of each individual tournament.

As it stands, Rosario Central had an impressive campaign, amassing a total of 66 points, the highest in the combined standings of the Apertura and Clausura tournaments, which also play a vital role in the qualifications for international competitions like the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana.

Following this achievement, Rosario Central celebrated by announcing on social media,

“We are the best team of the year,”

and they proceeded to add an eighth star to their jersey crest, signifying their successful year.

Current Season Overview

Earlier in the season, Platense secured the Apertura title, while the Clausura tournament is set to progress further with playoffs kicking off this weekend. Rosario Central, competing in Group B, leads the points table in the Clausura’s regular season, having accumulated 31 points. They are scheduled to face Estudiantes in the first round of the playoffs.

Changes in Argentine Soccer

The AFA, led by Claudio Tapia, has seen a series of format changes in recent years regarding tournaments, promotion, and relegation practices. However, this introduction of a new championship title amidst an ongoing season marks a unique shift in the organization of Argentine soccer.
