Andre Ward Joins Sacramento State as General Manager for Combat U Boxing Team

Andre Ward Takes on New Role in Boxing

Boxing legend Andre Ward has officially begun his leadership journey in the sport by accepting the position of General Manager for the Combat U Boxing Team at Sacramento State University. Known for his undefeated record and five-time world champion status, Ward was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2021. In this new role, he partners with Urijah Faber, co-founder of Combat U, making Ward the second Hall of Fame athlete to contribute to this expanding program in its second year.

Ward’s Vision for Young Fighters

Ward, who ended his illustrious career at a perfect 32-0, reflected on the new opportunity, expressing an understanding of the ambition young fighters possess.

“I know what it feels like to be a young fighter with big dreams. At Sacramento State’s Combat U, I see that same hunger in these athletes, and I want to be someone they can lean on as they chase their goals—in and out of the ring,”

he stated. Alongside his boxing achievements, Ward is well-known for his work as an author, speaker, and host. He aims to transfer his wealth of experience directly to aspiring boxers starting with the Hornets program in the upcoming 2025-2026 season.

Challenges and Future Aspirations

In a recent development, Ward made headlines by challenging heavyweight Anthony Joshua for a potential comeback, although that endeavor may have to be postponed for now. The boxing program at Sacramento State is under the guidance of head coach Brandon “Flawless” Gonzales, who previously led the inaugural Combat U team to a national championship. Gonzales praised Ward’s influence, noting,

“Andre Ward has set the standard in boxing, and now our athletes get the truly remarkable opportunity to learn from him directly. His involvement as our Boxing General Manager shows that Sacramento State is serious about their future.”

Significance of Ward’s Appointment

The announcement of Ward’s new role was made at the Capital Punishment XII amateur boxing event, which was organized by Flawless Boxing & Fitness in collaboration with Sacramento State. University President Dr. Luke Wood highlighted the importance of this appointment for both the Combat U program and the university as a whole:

“Bringing Andre Ward to our boxing program is a reminder of what’s possible when we think boldly about student opportunities. He will make a lasting mark by showing our students the value of hard work and character in everything they do.”
