Ancelotti Highlights Neymar’s Fitness as Key to World Cup Selection

Importance of Neymar’s Physical Readiness

Carlo Ancelotti, the head coach of Brazil, emphasized the importance of Neymar’s physical readiness as crucial for his inclusion in the national team ahead of next year’s World Cup. Neymar, who holds the record as Brazil’s all-time leading goal scorer with 79 goals, has not represented the national side since suffering a severe knee injury in October 2023, which involved tearing his ACL and meniscus. The 33-year-old forward, previously of Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain fame, has missed both of Ancelotti’s recent squad selections due to ongoing health issues following his return to Santos in January this year.

Neymar’s Disagreement with Ancelotti

Amidst this backdrop, Neymar expressed disagreement with Ancelotti’s rationale for his absence from the squad during the World Cup qualifiers in September, claiming his exclusion was based on tactical decisions rather than any concerns over his physical readiness.

“I was left out for technical reasons; it’s the coach’s opinion, and I respect that,”

Neymar stated, defending his position.

Ancelotti’s Response and Expectations

In a response to Neymar’s comments, Ancelotti made it clear that the key factor determining Neymar’s place in the lineup would be his fitness rather than his undeniable talent.

“It’s not about evaluating how Neymar plays; everybody knows his capabilities. However, in contemporary football, a player must be in peak physical condition to capitalize on their skills,”

Ancelotti remarked in an interview with ESPN Brasil.

“If Neymar can reach his optimal form, I see no reason he shouldn’t be part of the national team.”

Ancelotti further discussed that despite Neymar’s versatility as both a wide and central attacker in the past, he believes that current limitations may prevent Neymar from fulfilling the physical demands necessary for a wide position in modern play. The head coach mentioned their prior discussions and asserted that Neymar should focus on playing centrally, where he could serve effectively as either an attacking midfielder or striker.

Brazil’s World Cup Qualification and Future Prospects

Brazil recently wrapped up its qualification for the 2026 World Cup in June, but the campaign ended on a disappointing note with a 1-0 defeat to Bolivia, leaving them fifth in the South American qualifiers.

Despite this setback, Ancelotti remains excited about the upcoming World Cup, which will take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Having signed a one-year contract in June, the coach hinted at the possibility of extending his tenure beyond the World Cup.

“Training for the World Cup with Brazil is a unique experience. While I feel it was right to sign only for one year, I am open to discussions about continuing after the tournament, as I am very happy here with my family,”

he remarked, adding that extending his role until the 2030 World Cup would be something he would welcome.
