The Anaheim Ducks’ New Coaching Era
The Anaheim Ducks have recently ushered in a new chapter with the hiring of renowned coach Joel Quenneville and his associated coaching team, which includes Jay Woodcroft and Ryan McGill. This fresh leadership is expected to significantly influence both the current roster and the future composition of the team.
Defensive Overhaul
A key focus of their strategies will be on overhauling the defensive systems, particularly after the Ducks’ dismal performance in that area over the preceding three seasons, where they consistently finished among the worst in various statistical metrics.
To address these shortcomings, the Ducks are transitioning from a man-to-man defensive scheme to a pressure-zone methodology. This change is expected to align better with the players’ skills, especially benefiting centers Ryan Strome and Mason McTavish, along with defensemen Drew Helleson and Pavel Mintyukov, as it emphasizes off-the-puck awareness and positional understanding.
Lukas Dostal’s Role
While much of the discussion has centered on how different players will adapt to the new systems, attention should also be given to the newly extended franchise goalie, Lukas Dostal. At 25 years old, Dostal has made a name for himself as one of the NHL’s promising young goalies. Despite facing a barrage of shots in past seasons, with the Ducks’ defensive play struggling to meet league averages, he has consistently produced remarkable statistics.
Recently, the Ducks rewarded him with a substantial five-year contract extension worth an annual average of $6.5 million.
Performance Statistics
During the initial two full seasons leading into the 2024-25 season, Dostal recorded a 34-46-10 record, notching a .902 save percentage and saving nearly eight goals above expected. His situation was challenging, facing the highest number of shots against (32.73 per 60 minutes) among goaltenders who played at least 50 games, along with the third-most high-danger shots (8.72 per 60 minutes).
Adapting to New Strategies
Dostal’s style is characterized by his strong positional play, his ability to maintain composure during offensive onslaughts, and his skill in tracking pucks in high-traffic scenarios. The new defensive strategy is anticipated to bolster his performance, ensuring that he has better coverage during prolonged offensive cycles, which should help keep opponents away from high-quality shots.
Commenting on the new system following a preseason match against the Kings, Dostal expressed his appreciation for the predictability it brings, stating, “You kind of know all sides of the team and what you’re giving up. Nothing is 100%, but I think it’s more predictable. I personally like the system because it’s something we always played in Czech, we played it on the Czech national team when I was growing up, even in Finland. It’s something I’m used to.”

This familiarity is enabling Dostal to hone his skills further, particularly in improving his rebound control—a crucial area given the aggressive offensive play he often faces. He noted his offseason efforts to mitigate rebounds through better technical work, a focus enhanced by the frequent traffic he encounters during games.
As the Ducks prepare for the upcoming season, Dostal will have the chance to establish himself as the unequivocal number one goalie, with clearer playing time and responsibilities.
