Anaheim Ducks bolster defense with acquisition of John Carlson from Washington Capitals

Trade Announcement

In a significant move aimed at enhancing their chances of reaching the playoffs, the Anaheim Ducks have secured seasoned defenseman John Carlson from the Washington Capitals. The announcement was made Thursday evening, just ahead of the NHL trade deadline set for Friday noon PST. To facilitate this transaction, Anaheim has agreed to send a conditional first-round pick for the 2026 or 2027 draft, along with a third-round selection for 2027 to the Capitals.

Player Profile

Carlson, known for his pivotal role in the Capitals’ 2018 Stanley Cup victory and as a former Norris Trophy finalist, is expected to infuse leadership and veteran expertise into a Ducks lineup that is gearing up for its first playoff appearance since 2017. Ducks’ general manager Pat Verbeek highlighted Carlson’s attributes, stating:

“His leadership, character, and high hockey IQ will greatly benefit our young team. We are thrilled to welcome a Stanley Cup champion as we aim for a strong finish this season.”

This season, Carlson has compiled 10 goals and 46 points over 55 games with Washington, and impressively leads all Capitals players in average ice time, clocking in at over 23 minutes per game. However, he has been sidelined since February 5 due to a lower-body injury. His debut with the Ducks remains uncertain, although he had been practicing with the Capitals before the trade took place. Upon joining the Ducks, he will become part of a strong right-side defensive trio along with Jacob Trouba and Radko Gudas.

Career Highlights

In an extensive career spanning 17 seasons and 1,143 games with the Capitals, Carlson has achieved 771 points, comprising 166 goals and 605 assists, placing him 24th on the all-time list for NHL defensemen. His playoff experience includes 78 points accrued in 137 games, and he has represented the United States in international competitions such as the 2014 Sochi Olympics, the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, and by scoring the game-winning goal in the 2010 World Junior Championship.

Current Team Status

Currently, the Ducks are in a promising position, sitting second in the Pacific Division with a robust record, having won 13 of their last 16 encounters. They are scheduled to face off against the Montreal Canadiens on Friday, followed by a match against the St. Louis Blues on Sunday, before embarking on a crucial four-game road trip across Canada.

As developments continue to unfold regarding Carlson’s transition to Anaheim, further updates will be provided in upcoming reports.
